Since 1939, DaimlerChrysler AG has engaged in research to
increase the safety of its products. Engineers have consistently
succeeded in setting new standards in the field of safety
technology. Optimal passenger safety is one of the fundamental
principles of the DaimlerChrysler AG corporate philosophy.
In 1994, smart gmbh began to develop the first fortwo coupé. As
a subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler AG, the safety philosophy and high
standards of the parent company are also rigidly enforced here. And
now, a true challenge: Achieve the same level of safety in a car
that measures only 2.5 metres.
Thanks to a combination of years of experience, intensive
research and development, and an extensive series of crash tests,
the crash management system was developed. This system allows small
cars to be every bit as safe as their larger counterparts.
