Mercedes-Benz Canada officially delivers two smart fortwo coupes to Transport Canada (October 22, 2004)
In a ceremony held on Parliament Hill today, Mercedes-Benz Canada’s President and CEO, Marcus Breitschwerdt, officially handed the keys of two smart fortwo coupés to Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre. The smart fortwo is being imported and commercialized in Canada by Mercedes-Benz Canada and will be sold through its network of 44 smart centres strategically located across the country.
Transport Canada purchased these two cars from a local Ottawa Mercedes-Benz dealer for use as part of the ministry’s fleet.
New Canadian vehicle entries such as the smart fortwo now actively contribute to reducing damaging greenhouse emissions by 20% and smog in the cities by 30% with the help of the advanced common rail diesel technology, which powers these cars.
Over the course of the last few years, Transport Canada has purchased several smart cars from Mercedes-Benz Canada through its Advanced Technology Vehicles Program in order to investigate the possibilities of introducing environmentally-friendly cars in Canada that also meet its tough vehicle safety standards.
The new generation of diesel vehicles equipped with advanced technology such as the common rail diesel cdi engines provides an improvement of approximatively 40% in fuel consumption when compared to gasoline engines. The smart fortwo's fuel consumption is rated at 4.2 litres/ 100km for combined highway and city driving (highway: 3.8 litres/100 km, city: 4.6 litres/100 km).
President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Canada, Marcus Breitschwerdt said, “It’s very exciting for us to see that these two smart fortwo will be added to Transport Canada’s vehicle fleet. While this car is indeed impressive because of the construction of its sophisticated and safe Tridion cell, its reduced emissions and its exemplary fuel consumption; the Canadian consumers are equally thrilled by its cool looks and its fun-to-drive quotient. Despite its small appearance, the smart fortwo has a tremendous amount of substance. Its revolutionary engineering and an entirely unique concept offer smart drivers an intelligent approach to mobility, functionality and practicality.
“I am happy to announce that after in-depth testing, Transport Canada has purchased the smart fortwo," said Mr. Lapierre. "This purchase demonstrates the Government of Canada's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and encouraging a more sustainable transportation system."
The smart fortwo has now been on sale in Canada for several weeks. It meets all of the Canadian emission and safety requirements imposed by Transport and Environment Canada. The first smart car was introduced in Europe in 1998 and since then, more than 500,000 smart fortwos have been sold around the world.
