Mercedes-Benz Canada officially launches the smart brand in Canada (September 24, 2004)
The first Canadian smart fortwo coupés and fortwo cabriolets cdi have now arrived in Halifax and are en route to Mercedes-Benz dealerships across the country where they will be available for sale as of October 4th. This follows the announcement made in February 2004 at the Canadian International Autoshow in Toronto stating that the smart brand would be offered in Canada by Mercedes-Benz Canada as of the fall of this year.
Today marks the official debut of the smart brand in Canada. In response to high consumer interest, smart makes its initial foray into North America with the fortwo coupés and fortwo cabriolets cdi.
Already well-established globally where more than 100,000 units have been sold since its launch in 1999, the smart fortwo coupés and fortwo cabriolets offer the most successful three-cylinder cdi engine technology in the world. In Canada, they will be sold and serviced through a network of more than 40 Mercedes-Benz dealers strategically and conveniently located across the country.
The first full-fledged showroom in North America will open on October 4th at Mercedes-Benz Midtown, Mercedes-Benz Canada’s newest flagship retail operation in Toronto.
President and CEO of smart GmbH, Andreas Renschler, was extremely pleased with the brand's important first step in North America and said at the Paris Mondial de l'Automobile: "Since smart was launched in Europe more than six years ago, it has grown, matured and with this historic North American introduction, I can now say that it has become truly a global player. Canada is a very important market for smart as it will provide the foundation for the North American strategy of our brand."
Marcus Breitschwerdt, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Canada adds, "We were convinced that smart would be very well accepted here in Canada. Our intensive research confirmed unequivocally that the Canadian market was ready for smart and judging by the overwhelmingly positive consumer reaction since our February announcement, I am extremely confident that the smart brand and its product offerings will have a tremendous future in this country."
Over 1,000 units will be produced and delivered prior to the end of 2004. The smart fortwo coupe cdi starts at $16,500 while the smart fortwo cabriolet cdi will retail from $19,500. Both models will be available for sale as of October 4th in three design lines: pure, pulse and passion.
