smart Canada and the Vancouver Fringe Festival present Pacific Spirits in Motion, a unique on-line silent auction (September 13, 2005)
The Fringe Festival is driving a new trend in Vancouver and one lucky person will drive it home! The Vancouver Fringe Festival, in collaboration with smart Canada, a Division of Mercedes-Benz Canada Inc. and internationally recognized painter and designer Philippe Sokazo, is proud to present the Fringe smart. New to B.C., Sokazo brings his success with smart Paris to Vancouver. Sokazo has created a unique smart fortwo cdi car design especially for the Fringe. Inspired by our city’s beauty, Sokazo entitled the smart fortwo Pacific Spirits in Motion. The art smart will be available to the highest bidder in the Festival’s first on-line silent auctions in Fringe history.

“We are absolutely thrilled by this fundraising opportunity with smart Canada, a Division of Mercedes-Benz Canada,” said Kirsten Schrader, Vancouver Fringe Festival Executive Director. “We’ve never had something like this at the Festival before. smart is are one of the hottest items right now and it’s even hotter with custom artwork designed specifically for the Fringe. Philippe Sokazo has done an amazing job at creating an art smart.”

This work of art will be displayed during the Vancouver Fringe Festival, September 8-18th, beside Festival House on Granville Island. The Fringe unique smart fortwo will also be on display in the smart Centres, located in the Mercedes-Benz Vancouver dealers before and after the Fringe Festival.

September 19th to October 17th, Pacific Spirits in Motion smart car will be on display:
  • September 19th to 26th - Burnaby - 1325 Boundary Road
  • September 26th to October 3rd - North Vancouver – 1375 Marine Drive
  • October 3rd to 10th - Richmond – Richmond Auto Mall - 5691 Parkwood Way
  • October 10th to 17th - Broadway – 1395 West Broadway
In a unique on-line silent auction, bidders will have a chance to bid throughout the Fringe Festival and up until mid-October on the smart. An on-line bidding system will be available at www.vancouverfringe.com opening on the first day of the Vancouver Fringe Festival and then closing October 17th. On October 17th, the highest bidder will drive the Pacific Spirits in Motion smart car home.

The smart fortwo coupé was first launched in 1998 through a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Swatch. Following simultaneous releases in nine European countries, Mercedes-Benz took over the shares of Swatch and continued to produce the smart fortwo under the smart Brand, becoming a 100% owned subsidiary of the Mercedes Car Group. In 2004, the smart fortwo was released in Canada and as of August 2005, more than 3,300 units have been delivered. Equipped with an in-line, three-cylinder turbo diesel engine, it delivers 40 hp, 74 lb-ft of torque, and consumes a scant 4.2 litres of diesel fuel per 100 km. ABOUT PHILIPPE SOKAZO

Born in the South of France, Philippe Sokazo has studied Ethnology and travelled the world for knowledge and inspiration: Paris, New York, Miami, Bombay, London, Prague, Barcelona, Tokyo, Montreal and other destinations nourish his style and validate his work. A self-taught colorist and Beaux-Arts technician, Philippe Sokazo worked with industrials such as Golden or Lefranc-Bourgeois to develop new colours and techniques. Sometimes classified as “Neo-Pop”; Sokazo develops a unique and very personal universe, somewhere between “Pop Art” and “Hard-Edge”. Be it painted canvas or used to embellish daily life objects like furniture, floor tiles or rugs, packaging, jewellery, and even cars, Sokazo’s style succeeds in spreading happiness, contemplation, and humour to everyday life.


ABOUT THE VANCOUVER FRINGE FESTIVAL

The first Vancouver Fringe Festival took place in 1985 and has since become an annual event and September ritual. Produced by First Vancouver TheatreSpace Society, 2005 marks the 21st Anniversary of Vancouver’s ‘Best Arts Festival’ as voted by readers of the Georgia Straight. Every year, close to 700 performances from around the corner and around the world participate in the Vancouver Fringe Festival. The idea of a Fringe Festival was born in Edinburgh 55 years ago. Central to the global Fringe ideology is Access for All. With its mandate “Theatre for Everyone”, the Vancouver Fringe has always remained true to this philosophy.
